Description
The DuroStar DS5000DX is powerful and flexible, thanks to its dual-fuel technology that lets it run on both 120V and 240V. When it is running on gasoline, it has a running wattage of 4,000W and a peak wattage of 5,000W. When run on propane, it has a rated power of 3800 watts and a peak power of 4750 watts. The generator is meant to make 69 dBA of noise (less noisy than an office). It has a simple pull-start mechanism and a simple and elegant electric starter to get it going (battery included). With a 4 gallon fuel tank, the DS5000DX can run for about 8.9 hours at 0.5 load when using gasoline (fuel consumption is approximately 0.45 GPH). If you use propane instead, it can run for about 7.6 hours on a 20-pound tank (propane uses about 0.62 GPH). Since the DS5000DX has a THD of about 12%, it should not be used to power sensitive electronics.
Outlets
On the control panel, there are 3 AC outlets for: Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI; 120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle. The DS5000DX is ready for a transfer switch because it has a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle. You can easily connect it to your breaker box to power your home when the power goes out.
Features
The control center of the DS5000DX has a handy meter that shows voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours. This helps you keep track of its status and activity. In addition to this information, a light lets you know right away if the oil level is too low. The generator has a built-in fuel gauge that makes it quick, easy, and convenient to check how much gas is in the machine. For safety, the generator has an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, so you can use it without worrying. The DuroStar CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown also works well with the DS5000DX. If CO levels get too high too quickly, the generator will shut down automatically, a red light will come on, and the engine won’t start again for 5 minutes. It’s a nice extra safety measure, but don’t forget to take your generator outside at all times. The DuroStar DS5000DX comes with basic instructions and an owner’s manual to help you start the generator quickly. It also comes with a propane hose, funnel, and tool kit, among other things.
Mobility
The standard, open frame design of the DuroStar DS5000DX, which is 25 inches long, 23 inches wide, and 22 inches high, gives the generator stability and lets it be raised above ground level. This type of design is great for tough environments and heavy outdoor use. The generator weighs 135 pounds, so it may be hard to move or transport it by hand, even though it is technically considered “portable” (movable). But its wheels and folding handle make it easier to move once it’s on the floor.

- We compared more than 500 portable generators at 50% load. We found that there is “skewed right” distribution for the difference between 50% load and 25% load and the median comes at 1.43. With this number we converter all the 25% load runtime to 50% load. Same with the propane efficiency, where median is 1.38.
- For some generators where propane runtime was not given, we used NIST 1994 GGE (Gasoline Gallon Equivalent) formula: 5.66 lbs. of propane = 1 gal of gasoline. All propane runtime is for 20 lbs. propane tank (4.7 gallons).
- Unlike many other sites, we actually tried to find out information about each of the above requirements. However, we are human and are therefore capable of the odd oversight or mistake. Please let us know if you spot any missing or erroneous values so that we can fix them.
About the Manufacturer
The Ontario, California-based business DuroMax, which was established in 2003, is the owner of the DuroStar name. Typically, DuroStar generators and DuroMax generators are identical, with the exception of their color schemes and the manufacturing facility. Although DuroStar engines and generators are made in China, the US is home to the design and servicing centers.
Warranty Information
The warranty for the DuroStar DS5000DX lasts for up to 5 years. This warranty may not cover all parts of the generator or may only cover certain parts.
