Description
A 389 cc Honda GX390 OHV 4-stroke engine powers the Honda EG5000CL. It gives out 120/240V, runs on gasoline, and has a running wattage of 4,500W and a peak wattage of 5,000W. The noise level of the generator is 70 dBA, which is about the same as a vacuum cleaner. It is started with a simple pull-start mechanism. With a 6.3-gallon fuel tank, the EG5000CL can run for about 11 hours at 0.5 load on a full tank (fuel consumption is approximately 0.57 GPH).
Outlets
There are 6 AC outlets on the control panel: two 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI duplexes, a 120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle, and a 120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle. Even though this Honda generator isn’t quite RV Ready, an L5-30P to TT-30R adapter makes it easy to connect it to an RV. Also, the EG5000CL is ready for a transfer switch because it has a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle. It is easy to connect to a breaker box and can power your home if the power goes out.
Features
The generator has a built-in fuel gauge that makes it easy to see at a glance how much gas is in the tank. As for safety features, the device has an automatic shut-off for low oil (Oil Alert®) and an overload protection (circuit breaker), so you can use it without worrying. In addition to the features we’ve already talked about, the Honda EG5000CL comes with standard paperwork and an owner’s manual to help you get started right away. You can buy a storage cover from the company separately.
Mobility
The Honda EG5000CL is 26.8 inches long, 22.8 inches wide, and 22.6 inches high. Together with its traditional, open-frame design, they support the generator and allow it to be raised above the ground. This type of design is great for tough environments and heavy outdoor use. Even though the generator is technically considered to “be portable,” it will be very hard to move it by hand because it weighs 173 pounds (in the sense that it is movable). So, you might also want to think about buying the official wheel kit for it.

- We compared more than 500 portable generators at 50% load. We found that there is “skewed right” distribution for the difference between 50% load and 25% load and the median comes at 1.43. With this number we converter all the 25% load runtime to 50% load. Same with the propane efficiency, where median is 1.38.
- For some generators where propane runtime was not given, we used NIST 1994 GGE (Gasoline Gallon Equivalent) formula: 5.66 lbs. of propane = 1 gal of gasoline. All propane runtime is for 20 lbs. propane tank (4.7 gallons).
- Unlike many other sites, we actually tried to find out information about each of the above requirements. However, we are human and are therefore capable of the odd oversight or mistake. Please let us know if you spot any missing or erroneous values so that we can fix them.
About the Manufacturer
The Japanese Honda Motor Company, founded in 1948, has built a reputation for regularly delivering high-quality engines, motorized vehicles, and equipment. The business has built a solid name over the years in the power tool, motorbike, and vehicle industries. Since 1953, Honda’s power tool division has been manufacturing various power tools, such as tillers, mowers, blowers, sprayers, and of course, generators. Honda is still regarded as a legend among generator manufacturers even after the firm went worldwide and shifted the majority of its production from Japan to other Asian nations.
Warranty Information
There is a warranty on the Honda EG5000CL for up to 3 years. This warranty may not cover all parts of the generator or may only cover certain parts.
