Description
The gasoline-powered Honda GX270 OHV 4-stroke engine is at the heart of the Honda EG4000CL. It has a 120V/240V output and a running power of 3,500W and a peak power of 4,000W. The generator can make up to 66 dBA of noise (a little lower than background music). It uses a simple, traditional pull-start mechanism to get going. With a fuel capacity of 6.3 gallons, the EG4000CL can run at 0.5 load for about 14.8 hours on a full tank (fuel consumption is approximately 0.43 GPH).
Outlets
The following 6 AC outlets are on the control panel: Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI; 120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle; 120/240V 20A (L14-20R) receptacle. Even though this Honda generator isn’t quite RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle makes it easy to connect to an RV with an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor.
Features
The generator has a built-in fuel gauge that makes it easy to see at a glance how much gas is in the tank. When it comes to security, this product has an automatic low oil shut-off (Oil Alert®) and an overload protection (circuit breaker), so you can use it without any worries. In addition to the features we’ve already talked about, the Honda EG4000CL comes with the usual paperwork and an owner’s manual, which will help you start your generator quickly. You can buy a storage cover from the company separately.
Mobility
The Honda EG4000CL measures L26.8 x W20.9 x H22.5 in, Together with its traditional, open-frame design, they support the generator and allow it to be raised above the ground. The device was made to work well in harsh conditions and in the great outdoors. Although the generator is officially called “portable,” it is heavy at 146.4 pounds, making manual movement or transport difficult (movable). Thus, you may also want to consider purchasing its official wheel kit.

- We compared more than 500 portable generators at 50% load. We found that there is “skewed right” distribution for the difference between 50% load and 25% load and the median comes at 1.43. With this number we converter all the 25% load runtime to 50% load. Same with the propane efficiency, where median is 1.38.
- For some generators where propane runtime was not given, we used NIST 1994 GGE (Gasoline Gallon Equivalent) formula: 5.66 lbs. of propane = 1 gal of gasoline. All propane runtime is for 20 lbs. propane tank (4.7 gallons).
- Unlike many other sites, we actually tried to find out information about each of the above requirements. However, we are human and are therefore capable of the odd oversight or mistake. Please let us know if you spot any missing or erroneous values so that we can fix them.
About the Manufacturer
The Japanese Honda Motor Company, founded in 1948, has built a reputation for regularly delivering high-quality engines, motorized vehicles, and equipment. The business has built a solid name over the years in the power tool, motorbike, and vehicle industries. Since 1953, Honda’s power tool division has been manufacturing various power tools, such as tillers, mowers, blowers, sprayers, and of course, generators. Honda is still regarded as a legend among generator manufacturers even after the firm went worldwide and shifted the majority of its production from Japan to other Asian nations.
