Description
The Westinghouse WGen12000c is made with a gasoline-powered Westinghouse V-Twin engine with 713 cc and 22 hp. It has an output voltage of 120/240V and a running wattage of 12,000W and a peak wattage of 15,000. The generator has a noise level of 74 dBA, which is just a little louder than a shower. It is started with a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included). For even more convenience, you can also start the WGen12000c from a distance (key fob included). With a full tank, the WGen12000c can run for about 11 hours at 0.5 load for every 10.5 gallons of fuel (fuel consumption is approximately 0.95 GPH). The WGen12000c makes a clean sine wave with a Total Harmonic Distortion of less than 5%, so it’s safe to plug sensitive electronics into AC outlets (THD).
Outlets
The control panel has 5 AC outlets: a 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI outlet, a 120V 30A (L5-30R) outlet, a 120/240V 50A (14-50R) outlet, and a 120/240V 30A (L14-30R) outlet. It also has 2 DC outlets: two 5V USB ports (USB-A) that make it easy to charge devices like cell phones or tablets. Even though this Westinghouse generator isn’t quite RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle makes it easy to connect to an RV with an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Also, the WGen12000c has a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, which makes it ready for a transfer switch. It can power your home during a power outage because it is easy to connect to your breaker box.
Features
The WGen12000c’s control panel has a handy meter that shows voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours. This makes it easy to keep track of its status and activity. A built-in fuel gauge makes it easy and quick to check how much gas is in the generator. For safety, the generator has an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), so you can use it without worrying. It also has a sensor for carbon monoxide. This sensor is meant to measure the amount of carbon monoxide in the air while the generator is running. If the generator isn’t set up right and carbon monoxide levels get too high, the generator will turn off by itself. It’s a nice extra safety measure, but don’t forget to take your generator outside at all times. The Westinghouse WGen12000c comes with a tool kit, a key fob, a funnel, a battery charger, and oil, as well as the usual paperwork and an owner’s manual to get you up and running quickly.
Mobility
The Westinghouse WGen12000c has a typical open frame that is 34 inches long, 31 inches wide, and 35 inches high. This gives it support and stability and gives you the option of raising it above ground level. The design works well in rough places and for hard outdoor use. The generator weighs 352 pounds, so it may be hard to move or transport it by hand, even though it is technically considered “portable” (movable). Still, the generator is easy to move once it’s on the ground, thanks to its wheel kit and folding handle, which is a good way to make up for its lack of maneuverability. A lift hook on the top of the frame adds an extra safety measure when the device is being moved, unloaded, or loaded.

- We compared more than 500 portable generators at 50% load. We found that there is “skewed right” distribution for the difference between 50% load and 25% load and the median comes at 1.43. With this number we converter all the 25% load runtime to 50% load. Same with the propane efficiency, where median is 1.38.
- For some generators where propane runtime was not given, we used NIST 1994 GGE (Gasoline Gallon Equivalent) formula: 5.66 lbs. of propane = 1 gal of gasoline. All propane runtime is for 20 lbs. propane tank (4.7 gallons).
- Unlike many other sites, we actually tried to find out information about each of the above requirements. However, we are human and are therefore capable of the odd oversight or mistake. Please let us know if you spot any missing or erroneous values so that we can fix them.
About the Manufacturer
Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a part of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, which was founded in 1886 and is based in the US. Even though the company was bought by American CBS and merged with it, the Westinghouse name is still used for many of their electrical products, from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators are the main product of Westinghouse’s Outdoor Power Equipment branch. These generators used to be made by Westpro Power Systems, but Midwest Equipment bought it in 2016. Under the Westinghouse brand name, you can also buy lawn tools like trimmers and blowers. Every one of their products is made in the US. Several sources, though, say that most of the time they are made in China.
