Description
The Powerhorse 9000ES has an OHV 4-stroke engine with 420 cc and 12.5 hp that runs on gasoline. It has an output voltage of 120/240V and a running wattage of 7,250W and a peak wattage of 9,000W. The generator can make up to 75 dBA of noise (Slightly louder than a shower). It has both a traditional pull-start mechanism and a simple but elegant electric starter (battery not included). With a full tank, the 9000ES can run for about 9.6 hours at 0.5 load on its 6.6-gallon fuel tank (fuel consumption is approximately 0.69 GPH). The 9000ES makes a clean sine wave. Because it has 5% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), you can safely plug sensitive electronics into its AC outlets.
Outlets
The control panel has 10 AC outlets: four 120V 20A (5-20R) duplex outlets, a 120V 30A (L5-30R) outlet, and a 120/240V 30A (L14-30R) outlet. It also has 1 DC outlet, which is a 12V 8A receptacle that looks like a cigarette lighter and makes it easy to charge batteries. Even though this Powerhorse generator isn’t quite RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle makes it easy to connect to an RV with an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Also, the 9000ES is ready for a transfer switch because it has a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle. It is easy to connect to a breaker box and can power your home if the power goes out.
Features
The 9000ES’s control panel has a handy voltmeter that lets you check the power output at any time. This is helpful for keeping track of its status and activity. In addition to this information, a light shows you if there isn’t enough oil. The generator has a built-in fuel gauge that makes it quick, easy, and convenient to find out how much gas is in it. For safety, the generator has an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, so you can use it without worrying. In addition to the features we’ve already talked about, the Powerhorse 9000ES comes with the usual paperwork and an owner’s manual , so you can use it right away.
Mobility
The Powerhorse 9000ES has a typical open frame that is 29.3 x 26.6 x 26.4 inches long, 26.6 x 26.6 x 26.4 inches wide, and 26.4 inches high. This gives it support and stability and lets it be raised above ground level. The device was made to work well in harsh conditions and in the great outdoors. The generator is technically “portable” in the sense that you can move it, but at 206 pounds, it may be hard to move it by hand. Once it is on the ground, it can still be moved easily with the help of its wheels and folding handle.

- We compared more than 500 portable generators at 50% load. We found that there is “skewed right” distribution for the difference between 50% load and 25% load and the median comes at 1.43. With this number we converter all the 25% load runtime to 50% load. Same with the propane efficiency, where median is 1.38.
- For some generators where propane runtime was not given, we used NIST 1994 GGE (Gasoline Gallon Equivalent) formula: 5.66 lbs. of propane = 1 gal of gasoline. All propane runtime is for 20 lbs. propane tank (4.7 gallons).
- Unlike many other sites, we actually tried to find out information about each of the above requirements. However, we are human and are therefore capable of the odd oversight or mistake. Please let us know if you spot any missing or erroneous values so that we can fix them.
About the Manufacturer
The Northern Tool & Equipment Company Inc. owns and distributes gas-powered outdoor equipment under the Powerhorse brand name through its physical stores and website. Among the gas- and electric-powered instruments offered by Powerhorse are pressure washers, wood chippers and shredders, log splitters, electric generators, and inverters. Water pumps and engines are also available in the product line. The tagline of the company is “Power You Can Depend On”. Although they are produced in China, Powerhorse generators are designed, developed, and tested in Minnesota.
