Description
The 224 cc OHV 4-stroke engine of the DuroMax XP5500X runs on gasoline and can put out 120/240V. It has a running power of 4,500W and a maximum power of 5,500W. This generator has a noise level of 69 dBA, which is quieter than background music. It can be started with a pull-start, but it also has a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included). With a 4 gallon fuel tank, the XP5500X could run for 8.9 hours at 0.5 load if the tank is full (fuel consumption is approximately 0.45 GPH). Since the THD of the XP5500X is about 12%, it is not a good idea to use it to power sensitive electronics.
Outlets
The control panel has 3 AC outlets: a duplex 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI outlet, a 120/240V 30A (L14-30R) outlet, and a 120V/240V 20A (5-20R) receptacle. The XP5500X is ready for a transfer switch because it has a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle. You can connect it to a breaker box to power your home when the power goes out.
Features
The XP5500X’s control panel has a handy meter that shows voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours. This helps you keep track of its status and activity. In addition to this information, there is a light that lets you know when the oil level is too low. The generator has a built-in fuel gauge that makes it easy to see at a glance how much gas is in the tank. From a safety point of view, the product has an automatic shut-off for low oil and an overload protection (circuit breaker), so you can use it without worrying. The XP5500X also has the CO Alert carbon monoxide shut-off feature from DuroMax. If CO levels get too high too quickly, the generator will shut down automatically, a red light will come on, and the engine won’t start again for 5 minutes. It’s a nice extra safety measure, but don’t forget to take your generator outside at all times. The DuroMax XP5500X comes with a funnel and a tool kit, as well as the usual documentation and an owner’s manual to get you up and running quickly.
Mobility
The DuroMax XP5500X is 25 inches long, 23 inches wide, and 22 inches high. It has a typical open frame design that makes it stable and allows it to be raised above ground level. The design shown is great for the outdoors and other rough places. Even though this device is technically portable (meaning it can be moved), it weighs 135 pounds and can be hard to move and use without special tools. But its wheels and folding handle make it easier to move once it’s on the floor.

- We compared more than 500 portable generators at 50% load. We found that there is “skewed right” distribution for the difference between 50% load and 25% load and the median comes at 1.43. With this number we converter all the 25% load runtime to 50% load. Same with the propane efficiency, where median is 1.38.
- For some generators where propane runtime was not given, we used NIST 1994 GGE (Gasoline Gallon Equivalent) formula: 5.66 lbs. of propane = 1 gal of gasoline. All propane runtime is for 20 lbs. propane tank (4.7 gallons).
- Unlike many other sites, we actually tried to find out information about each of the above requirements. However, we are human and are therefore capable of the odd oversight or mistake. Please let us know if you spot any missing or erroneous values so that we can fix them.
About the Manufacturer
Small American power equipment manufacturer Duromax is headquartered in Ontario, California. Pumps, engines, pressure washers, and power generators are among the many goods in which Duromax excels. The company’s only concentration in this area is on portable generators, primarily those with small and medium power outputs as well as dual fuel devices. Although construction of Duromax generators is outsourced to other countries, they are designed and serviced in the US. DuroMax, which was established in 2003, has begun to emerge as a significant force in the market for power generators.
Warranty Information
The warranty for the DuroMax XP5500X lasts for up to 5 years. This warranty may not cover all parts of the generator or may only cover certain parts.
