Description
The DuroMax XP5500HX’s dual-fuel technology lets it put out 120/240V and gives it a lot of power and flexibility. If it is powered by gasoline, the device has a running power of 4,500W and a starting power of 5,500W. If it is powered by propane, it has a rated 4275 watts and a starting 5225 watts. The noise level of this generator is 69 dBA, which is less than a normal conversation. It can be started with a pull-start mechanism or a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included). With a fuel capacity of 4 gallons, the XP5500HX can run for about 8.9 hours at 0.5 load on gasoline (using about 0.45 GPH), or about 7.6 hours on a 20-pound propane tank (using about 0.62 GPH). Since the THD of the XP5500HX is about 12%, it is best not to use it to power sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel has 3 AC outlets: a duplex 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI outlet and a 120/240V 30A (L14-30R) outlet. It also has two DC outlets and two 5V USB ports, which make it easy to charge devices like cell phones and tablets. The XP5500HX is ready for a transfer switch because it has a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle. If the power goes out, you can easily connect it to a breaker box to power your home.
Features
On the control panel of the XP5500HX is a handy meter that shows voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours. This makes it easier to keep track of its status and activity. In addition to this information, a light shows you if there isn’t enough oil. The generator has a built-in fuel gauge that makes it quick, easy, and convenient to check how much gas is in it. As for safety features, the device has a circuit breaker for overheating and an automatic shut-off for low oil, so you can use it without worry. The XP5500HX also has the CO Alert carbon monoxide shut-off feature from DuroMax. If CO levels get too high too quickly, the generator will shut down automatically, a red light will come on, and the engine won’t start again for 5 minutes. It’s a nice extra safety measure, but don’t forget to take your generator outside at all times. The DuroMax XP5500HX comes with a tool kit, a funnel, and a propane hose, as well as the usual paperwork and an owner’s manual to get you up and running quickly.
Mobility
The DuroMax XP5500HX has a standard, open frame that measures L23 x W25 x H22 in, This frame gives it support and lets it be lifted off the ground. The generator is built to work well outside and in rough places. Even though the generator is technically considered to “be portable,” it will be very hard to move it by hand because it weighs 128 pounds (in the sense that it is movable). Still, once it’s on the ground, its wheels and folding handle make it easy to move.

- We compared more than 500 portable generators at 50% load. We found that there is “skewed right” distribution for the difference between 50% load and 25% load and the median comes at 1.43. With this number we converter all the 25% load runtime to 50% load. Same with the propane efficiency, where median is 1.38.
- For some generators where propane runtime was not given, we used NIST 1994 GGE (Gasoline Gallon Equivalent) formula: 5.66 lbs. of propane = 1 gal of gasoline. All propane runtime is for 20 lbs. propane tank (4.7 gallons).
- Unlike many other sites, we actually tried to find out information about each of the above requirements. However, we are human and are therefore capable of the odd oversight or mistake. Please let us know if you spot any missing or erroneous values so that we can fix them.
About the Manufacturer
Small American power equipment manufacturer Duromax is headquartered in Ontario, California. Pumps, engines, pressure washers, and power generators are among the many goods in which Duromax excels. The company’s only concentration in this area is on portable generators, primarily those with small and medium power outputs as well as dual fuel devices. Although construction of Duromax generators is outsourced to other countries, they are designed and serviced in the US. DuroMax, which was established in 2003, has begun to emerge as a significant force in the market for power generators.
Warranty Information
A warranty covers the DuroMax XP5500HX for up to 3 years. This warranty may not cover all parts of the generator or may only cover certain parts.
