Description
The Westinghouse WGen9500DF is powerful and flexible, thanks to its dual-fuel technology that lets it run on both 120V and 240V. When powered by gasoline, it has a running wattage of 9,500W and a maximum wattage of 12,500W. When run on propane, it has a rated power of 8500 watts and a peak power of 11200 watts. The generator has both a simple and elegant pull-start mechanism and an electric starter (battery included). It has a noise level of 74 dBA (A tad noisier than a vacuum cleaner). The WGen9500DF can also be started from a distance for added convenience (key fob included). With 6.6 gallons of gas, the WGen9500DF can run for up to 17.5 hours (fuel consumption is approximately 0.55 GPH). It can run for up to 11 hours on propane (on a 20 lbs tank – propane consumption around 0.43 GPH). Since the WGen9500DF has a THD of about 23%, it shouldn’t be used to power electronics that are sensitive to noise.
Outlets
There are 6 AC outlets on the control panel: two 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI duplexes, a 120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle, and a 120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle. Since it has a 14-50R outlet, this Westinghouse unit is ready for use in an RV with a 50-amp service. The WGen9500DF is also ready for a transfer switch because it has a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle. If the power goes out, you can easily connect it to a breaker box and keep your home running.
Features
The WGen9500DF’s control panel has a handy meter that shows voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours. This makes it easy to keep track of its status and activity. The generator has a built-in fuel gauge that makes it quick, easy, and convenient to check how much gas is in it. From a safety point of view, the product has an automatic shut-off for low oil and an overload protection (circuit breaker), so you can use it without worrying. The Westinghouse WGen9500DF comes with basic instructions and an owner’s manual to help you start the generator quickly. It also comes with a propane hose, a tool kit, a funnel, oil, a key fob, and a battery charger. You can also buy a storage cover that is made by the company.
Mobility
The Westinghouse WGen9500DF is 27.2 inches long, 26.1 inches wide, and 26.5 inches high. Together with its traditional, open-frame design, they support the generator and allow it to be raised above the ground. This type of design is great for tough environments and heavy outdoor use. Even though this device is technically portable (meaning it can be moved), it weighs 211 pounds and can be hard to move and use without special tools. Still, because of its wheel kit (dia:10 “Once the generator is on the ground, it is easy to move thanks to its wheels and folding handle, which make up for its lack of maneuverability.

- We compared more than 500 portable generators at 50% load. We found that there is “skewed right” distribution for the difference between 50% load and 25% load and the median comes at 1.43. With this number we converter all the 25% load runtime to 50% load. Same with the propane efficiency, where median is 1.38.
- For some generators where propane runtime was not given, we used NIST 1994 GGE (Gasoline Gallon Equivalent) formula: 5.66 lbs. of propane = 1 gal of gasoline. All propane runtime is for 20 lbs. propane tank (4.7 gallons).
- Unlike many other sites, we actually tried to find out information about each of the above requirements. However, we are human and are therefore capable of the odd oversight or mistake. Please let us know if you spot any missing or erroneous values so that we can fix them.
About the Manufacturer
Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment is a part of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, which was founded in 1886 and is based in the US. Even though the company was bought by American CBS and merged with it, the Westinghouse name is still used for many of their electrical products, from power plants to portable generators. Portable generators are the main product of Westinghouse’s Outdoor Power Equipment branch. These generators used to be made by Westpro Power Systems, but Midwest Equipment bought it in 2016. Under the Westinghouse brand name, you can also buy lawn tools like trimmers and blowers. Every one of their products is made in the US. Several sources, though, say that most of the time they are made in China.
