Description
With its dual-fuel technology, the WEN DF400i can provide 120V power and can be used in many different ways. When it is running on gasoline, it has a running wattage of 3,200W and a peak wattage of 4,000W. When run on propane, it has a rated power of 2900 watts and a peak power of 3200 watts. Also, since the generator can work in parallel (but doesn’t come with a parallel kit), it can be linked to a second unit to make more power. With WEN’s Auto Fuel Selection technology, the fuel source (LPG or gasoline) is chosen automatically based on availability, with LPG being given priority. So, if the generator is hooked up to a propane tank with enough LPG, the generator will automatically use LPG. If there is no propane tank attached or not enough LPG in the tank, the generator will use gasoline. The inverter generator has both a traditional pull-start mechanism and a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included). It has a noise level of 58 dBA (lower decibel levels than an average neighbourhood). With a fuel capacity of 2.2 gallons, the DF400i can run for about 8.5 hours at 0.5 load with a full tank of gasoline (fuel consumption is approximately 0.26 GPH). If propane is used, it can run for about 9 hours (on a 20 lbs tank – propane consumption around 0.52 GPH). Since the DF400i makes a clean sine wave with a Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of less than 1.2%, you can safely plug sensitive electronics into the AC outlets.
Outlets
The control panel has 3 AC outlets: a duplex 120V 20A (5-20R) outlet, a 120V 30A (TT-30R) outlet, and a 120V 20A (TT-20R) outlet. Also, it has 3 DC outlets: two 5V USB ports that make it easy to charge devices like cell phones and tablets, and a 12V 8A receptacle that looks like a cigarette lighter and makes it easy to charge batteries. The TT-30R plug on this WEN generator is ready for an RV. TT stands for “Travel Trailer”.
Features
The DF400i’s control panel has a digital data center that helps you keep track of the machine’s state and activities by giving you data on its fuel level, voltage, lifetime operating hours, frequency, and power output. In addition to this information, a few light indicators let you know right away if the generator is ready, whether its oil levels are low, or whether it is overloaded. The DF400i can burn up the last of the fuel in the carburetor before turning off automatically by using the fuel shutdown mechanism, which stops the flow of fuel. This reduces maintenance requirements while extending the life of the carburetor by preventing build-up and obstructions brought on by stagnant gasoline. This device has an automated low oil shut-off and an overload safeguard (circuit breaker) for your safety, so you can use it with complete assurance. The WEN DF400i comes with the following accessories in addition to the usual paperwork and an owner’s manual , allowing you to use it straight away. These include a propane line, funnel, and tool kit. As a supplementary purchase, an official storage cover is additionally offered.
Mobility
The WEN DF400i is an inverter generator, and its closed design (L23.2 x W18 x H20.1 in) makes it look better than traditional devices with open frames. This kind of design is the most modern and easy way to make power for fun. Even though this generator is technically “portable” in the sense that it can be moved, it weighs 100 pounds, which makes it very hard to move by hand. Once it is on the ground, it can still be moved easily with the help of its two wheels and folding handle.

- We compared more than 500 portable generators at 50% load. We found that there is “skewed right” distribution for the difference between 50% load and 25% load and the median comes at 1.43. With this number we converter all the 25% load runtime to 50% load. Same with the propane efficiency, where median is 1.38.
- For some generators where propane runtime was not given, we used NIST 1994 GGE (Gasoline Gallon Equivalent) formula: 5.66 lbs. of propane = 1 gal of gasoline. All propane runtime is for 20 lbs. propane tank (4.7 gallons).
- Unlike many other sites, we actually tried to find out information about each of the above requirements. However, we are human and are therefore capable of the odd oversight or mistake. Please let us know if you spot any missing or erroneous values so that we can fix them.
About the Manufacturer
Nick Anton started WEN Products, an American power tool manufacturer and distributor, in 1951. WEN Products says that its research in random orbital technology contributed to the creation of current chainsaws, soldering tools, and wet sharpeners. The Illinois-based corporation increased the range of power tools that were available through its distribution network, including presses, drills, and of course, power generators. WEN is a distributor, and the majority of the products in its inventory are branded imports from Asian manufacturers.
