Description
The DuroStar DS5000X is made with a 224 cc OHV 4-stroke engine that runs on gasoline. It has a 120/240V output and a 4,000W running wattage and a 5,000W peak wattage. The generator is meant to make 69 dBA of noise (a little lower than background music). It has a simple pull-start mechanism and a simple and elegant electric starter to get it going (battery included). With a full tank, the DS5000X can run for about 8.9 hours at 0.5 load, thanks to its 4 gallon fuel tank (fuel consumption is approximately 0.45 GPH). Since the DS5000X has a THD of about 12%, it is best not to use it to power electronics that are sensitive to noise.
Outlets
The control panel has 3 AC outlets: a duplex 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI outlet and a 120/240V 30A (L14-30R) outlet. The DS5000X is ready for a transfer switch because it has a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle. If the power goes out, you can easily connect it to a breaker box and keep your home running.
Features
On the control panel of the DS5000X is a handy meter that shows voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours. This makes it easier to keep track of its status and activity. In addition to this information, there is a light that lets you know when the oil level is too low. A built-in fuel gauge makes it easy and quick to check how much gas is in the generator. For safety, the generator has an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, so you can use it without worrying. The DuroStar CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown also works well with the DS5000X. If CO levels get too high too quickly, the generator will shut down automatically, a red light will come on, and the engine won’t start again for 5 minutes. It’s a nice extra safety measure, but don’t forget to take your generator outside at all times. The DuroStar DS5000X comes with more than just the usual paperwork and an owner’s manual to get you up and running quickly. There is a tool kit and a funnel.
Mobility
The DuroStar DS5000X is 25 inches long, 23 inches wide, and 22 inches high. It has a typical open frame design that makes it stable and allows it to be raised above ground level. The generator is built to work well outside and in rough places. The generator is technically “portable” in the sense that you can move it, but at 130 pounds, it may be hard to move it by hand. But its wheel kit and folding handle make it easy to move once it’s on the ground, which makes up for its lack of maneuverability.

- We compared more than 500 portable generators at 50% load. We found that there is “skewed right” distribution for the difference between 50% load and 25% load and the median comes at 1.43. With this number we converter all the 25% load runtime to 50% load. Same with the propane efficiency, where median is 1.38.
- For some generators where propane runtime was not given, we used NIST 1994 GGE (Gasoline Gallon Equivalent) formula: 5.66 lbs. of propane = 1 gal of gasoline. All propane runtime is for 20 lbs. propane tank (4.7 gallons).
- Unlike many other sites, we actually tried to find out information about each of the above requirements. However, we are human and are therefore capable of the odd oversight or mistake. Please let us know if you spot any missing or erroneous values so that we can fix them.
About the Manufacturer
The Ontario, California-based business DuroMax, which was established in 2003, is the owner of the DuroStar name. Typically, DuroStar generators and DuroMax generators are identical, with the exception of their color schemes and the manufacturing facility. Although DuroStar engines and generators are made in China, the US is home to the design and servicing centers.
Warranty Information
The warranty for the DuroStar DS5000X lasts for up to 5 years. This warranty may not cover all parts of the generator or may only cover certain parts.
