Description
The DuroStar DS4500X is made with a 212 cc OHV 4-stroke engine that runs on gasoline. It has an output voltage of 120/240V and a running wattage of 3,500W and a peak wattage of 4,500W. This generator has a noise level of 69 dBA, which is quieter than background music. It can be started with a simple pull-start mechanism, but it also has an easy-to-use electric starter (battery included). The DS4500X can run for about 10.4 hours at 0.5 load on a full tank and 4 gallons of fuel (fuel consumption is approximately 0.38 GPH). Due to its relatively high THD (12%), the DS4500X can’t be used to power sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
Two 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI duplex outlets and a 120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle are on the control panel. The DS4500X is ready for a transfer switch because it has a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle. If the power goes out, you can easily connect it to a breaker box and keep your home running.
Features
The status and activity of the DS4500X can be easily checked on the control panel, which has a meter that shows voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours. In addition to this, the featured light indicator will let you know when the oil level is too low. A built-in fuel gauge makes it easy and quick to check how much gas is in the generator. From a safety point of view, the product has an automatic shut-off for low oil and an overload protection (circuit breaker), so you can use it without worrying. DuroStar’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown is also helpful for the DS4500X. If CO levels get too high too quickly, the generator will shut down automatically, a red light will come on, and the engine won’t start again for 5 minutes. It’s a nice extra safety measure, but don’t forget to take your generator outside at all times. In addition to the usual paperwork and an owner’s manual , which will help you get started right away, the DuroStar DS4500X comes with a tool kit and a funnel.
Mobility
The DuroStar DS4500X has a standard, open frame that is 25 inches long, 23 inches wide, and 22 inches high. This frame gives it support and lets it be lifted off the ground. This type of design is great for tough environments and heavy outdoor use. Even though the generator is technically considered to “be portable,” it will be very hard to move it by hand because it weighs 126 pounds (in the sense that it is movable). But its wheels and folding handle make it easier to move once it’s on the floor.

- We compared more than 500 portable generators at 50% load. We found that there is “skewed right” distribution for the difference between 50% load and 25% load and the median comes at 1.43. With this number we converter all the 25% load runtime to 50% load. Same with the propane efficiency, where median is 1.38.
- For some generators where propane runtime was not given, we used NIST 1994 GGE (Gasoline Gallon Equivalent) formula: 5.66 lbs. of propane = 1 gal of gasoline. All propane runtime is for 20 lbs. propane tank (4.7 gallons).
- Unlike many other sites, we actually tried to find out information about each of the above requirements. However, we are human and are therefore capable of the odd oversight or mistake. Please let us know if you spot any missing or erroneous values so that we can fix them.
About the Manufacturer
The Ontario, California-based business DuroMax, which was established in 2003, is the owner of the DuroStar name. Typically, DuroStar generators and DuroMax generators are identical, with the exception of their color schemes and the manufacturing facility. Although DuroStar engines and generators are made in China, the US is home to the design and servicing centers.
